For us little folks…

Finally… a chair for the vertically challenged! Our family runs a little on the short side… some of us gals barely reach five feet tall… and finding sofas and chairs that fit us is not easy. Our guys have actually trimmed the legs off brand new chairs to make them more comfy. Weren’t we surprised to open the mail and find this new page to add to our Johnston Benchworks catalog…

JohnstonLowGap0001

Introducing the Low Gap Settle and Chair… it also comes in a Sofa and Chair-and-a-Half  length, and they have footstools and benches of the same height. Melody, Kim, and Kate are jumping up and down for joy… and trying to figure out how we can order one for ourselves!

The New Garden, con’t.

Just wanted to show you all the well house Dad is building! It’s just about done, but I hear him sawing away on something outside, so there must be more coming… maybe a platform around the bottom?  This is modeled after the well behind the Raleigh Tavern… when in Williamsburg, we always go to the bakery back there and buy Virginia Ham sandwiches on biscuits, hunks of cheese, apple pasties (that’s not a typo… it’s pronounced “pass-tees”), and then sit near this well and eat our lunch. The birds and squirrels all congregate around the bakery and perform all sorts of antics to earn the crumbs people throw to them. The birds are not shy at all, and will practically take a piece of biscuit right from your hands! Without further ado… the well house in Hudson’s Garden!

We also just updated our home page with information about our upcoming EasterWeekend Open House… come meet our folk artists in person! They’re a neat bunch of folks, and very talented too!  So far we’ve got carvers, painters, papercutters, and basket weavers… plus Katie Moose will be here on Friday for a book signing. Weather permitting, our Kate will be doing open fire cooking demonstrations… we’re just not sure which century she’ll be in yet!

And Kim caught Melody & Kate jumping in the dumpster a few days ago… in case you wondered what we did for fun around here!

A quick lunch!

Hello folks! In the spirit of our occasionally-published-store newsletter, we thought we’d share a quick recipe with you all! Kim’s been enjoying this all week… it’s as fast to fix as a sandwich, and is full of yummy things. Great for using up left-overs, and ingredients are easily substituted.

If you open a can of black beans and put them in a plastic container in the fridge, they’ll stretch out over several days. Kim’s been using left-over brown rice pilaf and grated parmesan cheese. The veggies can vary if you don’t like avocado… but it’s a Good-For-You fat. (Here is your “Official Permission Slip” to eat it… 1/4 of an avocado is a good-sized portion!)

(We think that if you click on the “burrito wrap” words, they will print out index-card size.)

Girls, you’ve been asking about these candles…

… And they finally arrived!

Yummy scents, and so primitive and grungy! We just received our first shipment of Americana Vintage candles! Nutmeg & Ginger, Cabin in the Woods, Homestead, Lemon Custard, and Evergreen & Citrus.. incredibly spicy scents! They burn forever, and will make your whole house smell great!

Back to Blogging…

Hello to all our friends and family! We’re back open just a few days a week here at Hudson’s, and it’s SO good to see all our people again! We missed you all! We’re going to try to keep adding posts here to keep you all updated on what’s new and exciting at the store, so keep checking back every so often!

We wanted to let you know we have Katie Moose’s new cookbook, God’s Bounty: 365 Days of Inspirational Cooking! It is a wonderful treasure that pairs Biblical passages, favorite hymns, and inspirational writing with a recipe for each day of the year. Katie’s friend Jerry Canada painted the lovely cover. Come in a get a copy while they last… it makes a wonderful gift for mothers, sisters, best girlfriends, or a new bride!
